Q+A Supernatural SPF50+ Ceramide Silk Facial Sunscreen

A high-protection SPF has been one of Antipodes’ most requested products over the last 20 years.

It’s extremely challenging to create a high protection SPF that feels good on the skin, whilst retaining a 100% natural-origin status.

We think we’ve delivered an exceptional product that is worth the wait.

Keep reading to find questions and answers about application and texture, sun protection and product safety, and the environmental impacts of this next-generation natural-origin sunscreen.

Application and texture of Supernatural SPF50+

How much SPF50+ should I apply?

Apply about half a teaspoon to your face and neck. If you feel you need to use slightly more to obtain full coverage, please do. Don’t forget your lips!

You can use a kitchen teaspoon to measure until you become familiar with how much product you need.

Will my skin feel greasy if I apply moisturiser before SPF?

This depends on your skin and the season.

Many Antipodes devotees love our SPF on top of their usual day cream – but for some the combination of the two can feel a bit rich or greasy.

As our SPF contains moisturising ingredients, you might like to try using a lighter or water-based moisturiser. We love Baptise H₂O Ultra-Hydrating Water Gel and Diem Vitamin C Pigment-Correcting Water Cream.

It can also be helpful to allow each product time to fully settle into your skin before applying the next product in your regime. Serums absorb in around 30 seconds, whereas it might take a full minute for richer products.

You’ll find that your skin craves more moisture in winter, so remember to adapt your regime to suit the season.

Supernatural SPF50+ has a ‘luminous’ finish. How can I create an everyday matte finish without using foundation?

Supernatural SPF50+ Ceramide Silk Facial Sunscreen provides a glow-enhancing base for makeup, but you can apply your favourite translucent powder on top of Supernatural SPF50+ if you prefer a natural matte finish.

When should I apply SPF in my regime? What order should I apply Antipodes products?

Supernatural SPF50+ is for all skin types and works on top of your existing regime.

We recommend using Antipodes products in the following order:

  • cleanser
  • toner
  • serum
  • eye cream or gel
  • moisturiser
  • Supernatural SPF50+
  • makeup, BB cream or translucent powder (if wearing)

Your skin’s needs vary at different times of the month and from summer to winter, so allow your regime to change with the seasons.

Is Supernatural SPF50+ suitable for sensitive or blemish-prone?

All skin types need protection from the sun. Because a mineral filter sits on the skin and doesn’t penetrate it, many people find it non-irritating and more easily tolerated by those with sensitive or blemish-prone skin.

Supernatural SPF50+ Ceramide Silk Sunscreen contains no added fragrance.

If you wear makeup every day or have oily skin, we recommend treating yourself to a double cleanse 2-3 times a week Hallelujah Lime & Patchouli Nourishing Cleanser or Grace Gentle Cream Cleanser and Makeup Remover, followed by Juliet Anti-Blemish Gel Cleanser.

Does Supernatural SPF50+ leave a white cast?

Early formulations of natural sunscreens are notorious for leaving a white cast on the skin.

Supernatural SPF50+ is a next-generation sunscreen, leaving no white cast once the product is fully absorbed.

My makeup/BB cream already contains SPF. Is it necessary to use another SPF product underneath?

It’s important to apply SPF under your makeup as most cosmetic products aren’t high in SPF or don’t provide broad-spectrum protection (protecting against both UVA & UVB rays).

Sun protection and product safety

What scientific studies have been conducted on your SPF50+ and its ingredients?

Our SPF50+ meets criteria of the Therapeutic Goods Administration Australia (TGA)—one of the world’s strictest testing standards for sunscreen production, labelling, efficacy and ingredients.

The product is independently tested on human skin during sun exposure.

This is one of the most popular SPF myths. Let’s look at this by measuring the percentage of UV rays that reach your skin.

  • SPF30 lets in 3.3% of UVB rays
  • SPF50 lets in 2% of UVB rays

This means that SPF30 allows 1.65 times more UV radiation onto your skin than SPF50. That’s a difference of 65%.

SPF50+ offers even more protection than SPF50, with only 1.7% of UVB rays reaching the skin.

Mineral sunscreens such as zinc oxide create a physical barrier on the skin to block and reflect UV rays.

UVB (Ultraviolet B) rays:

  • affect the skin’s top layer
  • result in burning and redness
  • can lead to skin cancer.

UVA (Ultraviolet A) rays:

  • penetrate more deeply
  • promote harmful free radicals that lead to premature ageing and sun damage
  • can also lead to skin cancer.

How often should I reapply SPF50+?

Like all sunscreens, it’s important to reapply SPF every two hours, especially if you are outdoors. Remember, sunscreen is only one form of UV protection. Wear a hat, sunglasses, and try to minimise exposure to direct sunlight when it’s at its peak.

Is Supernatural SPF50+ pregnancy safe?

All Antipodes products are considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. We use essential oils instead of artificial fragrances to create the exquisite Antipodes signature fragrances, however the concentration of these is extremely low so has no therapeutic effects on the body.

We recommend patch testing for all products as skin can become more sensitised during pregnancy due to hormonal changes.

If you are still unsure, we recommend you seek advice from your doctor.
